Tracy teen charged with attempted murder in shooting of 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall: prosecutor

A Tracy teenager is charged with attempted murder in the shooting of San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the charges against the teen Tuesday night. Because the suspect is a minor, authorities are not releasing his name.

Jenkins said the teen was charged with attempted murder, including enhanced sentencing for personal discharge of a firearm and personal and intentional discharge of that firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and attempted second-degree robbery.

Ricky Pearsall shooting: What we know

The San Francisco Police Department said that around 3:37 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, officers responded to Geary Street and Grant Avenue, near Union Square, after dispatchers received a call reporting shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers found Pearsall, a 23-year-old Phoenix native and the 31st overall pick in April's NFL draft, and the teen suffering from unspecified injuries. Officers administered first aid to Pearsall and the alleged shooter, and called for an ambulance. Both were taken to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.

During the preliminary investigation, police discovered that the teenager had attempted to rob Pearsall with a firearm. The two men then got into a fight, during which the football player was shot.

The 49ers released a statement Saturday night confirming that Pearsall was shot in the chest. The team announced that Pearsall was released from San Francisco General Hospital Sunday afternoon.

“Right now, the charges will be filed in juvenile court,” Jenkins said. “Under California law, a district attorney can no longer choose to file charges against a juvenile in adult court. The only mechanism for doing so is to request a transfer hearing, which requires a judge to rule on the juvenile’s fitness to be transferred to adult court, which essentially means the juvenile system would not be equipped to rehabilitate that juvenile.”

Moving forward, Jenkins said the San Francisco district attorney's office will “take a closer look at the case” to determine whether to request a transfer hearing.

Jenkins said the teen from Tracy, about 60 miles east of San Francisco in the San Joaquin Valley, is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Youth Guidance Center in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Pearsall is recovering well after his release from the hospital, according to 49ers general manager John Lynch.

“He's doing a lot better today than he was yesterday … it's really, really miraculous,” Lynch said Tuesday. “He didn't hit any organs. I feel like the whole nervous system is fine. I mean, it's pretty remarkable.”

Pearsall will miss at least the first four games of the NFL season after being placed on non-football injured reserve.
