Former PCS student found dead near Thames Elementary School, school confirms; investigation into death underway

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Police have launched a death investigation after a body was found near Thames Elementary School in Hattiesburg.

Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem confirmed the body found was that of an 18-year-old male. The coroner's office has not yet released the name of the deceased.

A Hattiesburg Police Department officer confirmed the body was not that of a student from the nearby school.

PCS Director of Communications Haylie Taylor released a statement on behalf of the school in response to the situation:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our former students this morning and ask everyone to pray for our school community and the families involved. We have counselors on site for our students, staff, and PCS community members as they navigate this tragedy.

At this time, we are reminded that our hope is found in Jesus and the promise of eternity, and we are called to care for one another.

In the statement, PCS confirms that the 18-year-old was a former student.

Police also said they do not suspect any foul play and there is no threat to the surrounding community.

School activities are still taking place as normal at Thames Elementary School.

The body was discovered near the intersection of Jamestown Road and Hillendale Drive Tuesday morning.

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker released a statement via Facebook post, encouraging the community to pray for the families affected by this situation, as well as two fatal crashes that occurred in the city.

“Hattiesburg is a family, and we need to reach out and support those who are grieving,” Barker said. “Be kind to each other.”

Klem said an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning at the state crime lab in Biloxi to determine a possible cause of death.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and would release more information as it became available.
