Bangkok subway shooting: Knife-wielding man pleads not guilty, allegedly threatens to kill police

The 37-year-old man shot dead by police in a Brooklyn subway station after allegedly brandishing a knife has pleaded not guilty to a litany of charges including felonious assault, possession of a weapon and making threats.

Derrell Mickles was arraigned Friday from his hospital bed due to injuries sustained in Sunday's heated confrontation with the NYPD, which also left two innocent bystanders and an officer injured by stray bullets.

Prosecutors also said Mickles allegedly told officers, “You're going to get me killed if you don't leave me alone” when they asked him to disarm at the Sutter Avenue Station L in Brownsville.

Bail was set at $200,000 cash and he is due back in court on November 20.

What happened?

According to the New York Police Department, the shooting happened around 3 p.m. when two officers noticed Mickles had entered the station without paying. The officers saw what appeared to be a knife in his hand.

Officers followed the man to the elevated subway platform, but he refused to comply with orders to stop and whispered threats to officers, police said.

“I'm not dropping the knife. Shoot me,” Mickles threatened, according to prosecutors.

As the L train pulled into the station, Mickles entered a car and told officers, “Don’t touch me. Shoot,” prosecutors said.

Officers then used two Tasers, but neither succeeded in incapacitating the man. Prosecutors say he chased one of the officers down the dock with the knife in his hand.

The two officers fired multiple rounds. Mickles was hit multiple times, but the shots also hit one of the officers and two bystanders, Gregory Delpeche, 49, and a 26-year-old woman.

A video posted online by a witness after the shooting shows a chaotic scene, with angry passengers fleeing, police officers running to help the wounded and the injured officer suddenly realizing he had been shot as well. In one video, the victims can be seen lying on the ground in two different subway cars.

Who is Derrell Mickles?

According to his lawyer and the prosecutor, Mickles has a criminal record with convictions for assault and drug trafficking.

The attorney also said Mickles does not have “substantial means” and lives in a Manhattan apartment. He recently worked as a chef at Governor's Island and the U.S. Open.

What happened to the passers-by and the shot policeman?

Delpeche was hit in the head by a stray bullet while on his way to work.

According to his cousin, he underwent cranial surgery to reduce swelling caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

“He’s breathing through a tube right now,” Greg Nougues, Delpeche’s cousin, told The Associated Press in a phone call Tuesday as he drove to the hospital to visit him. He added that the family was in a “wait and see.”

Nougues said the prognosis was uncertain and doctors had to open his skull to operate on brain swelling. He added that the family was seeking a lawyer.

A bullet grazed the 26-year-old woman, and the officer, who was hit near the armpit, is expected to recover.
