Cards Against Humanity sues Elon Musk for million

Cards Against Humanity has just filed a $15 million lawsuit against SpaceX.

Cards Against Humanity (CAH), the Chicago-based company behind the hit adult board game in which players use cards to create strings of sentences that are either wonderfully clever or hilariously disturbing, issued a statement Friday (Sept. 20) blasting Elon Musk and SpaceX for allegedly encroaching on and damaging land that CAH purchased in 2017. The land is located along the U.S.-Mexico border, and CAH purchased it as part of a movement to thwart former President Donald Trump’s plan to build a long-term border fence.

According to the statement, Cards Against Humanity accuses SpaceX of “trespassing, destruction of property, and damage to brand” due to “unauthorized storage of construction materials and equipment” on the gaming company’s land. If the lawsuit is heard and results in a positive outcome for the plaintiff, the entertainment company promises to redistribute all monetary gains among the original supporters of its 2017 land purchase.

In 2017, CAH purchased the land near Brownsville, Texas, as part of its Cards Against Humanity Saves America campaign, in which 150,000 customers paid the company $15 each to ensure the land would be protected from Trump’s infamous “wall.” The land is near Starbase, SpaceX’s primary site for developing and testing its new Starship megarocket.

In 2024, Musk “snuck up on us and completely destroyed this land with gravel, tractors, and space junk. How could this happen?” Cards Against Humanity wrote in its press release. “After catching him, SpaceX gave us a 12-hour ultimatum to accept a paltry offer that was less than half the value of the land.”

Cards Against Humanity vehemently declined the offer.

“While this doesn’t come close to making up for the anguish our fans felt watching Elon Musk defile their once-green land—where wild horses roamed freely in the Texas moonlight—we believe it’s a good start,” the statement read. “We promised to use every legal tool at our disposal to protect this land from tyrants like Trump and Musk. If we don’t act now, why would anyone trust us again?”

The lawsuit filed by Cards Against Humanity against SpaceX is one of a handful of charges the rocket company has faced. On Tuesday (Sept. 17), for example, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it plans to fine SpaceX $630,000 because two launches last year used modified procedures before the requested changes were approved.

On June 12, eight former SpaceX employees filed a lawsuit against Musk and SpaceX over alleged sexual harassment they experienced while at the company, as well as retaliation from a whistleblower.
