Clarkfield man shot by police accused of stealing shotgun from great-uncle

Police said they found a message scrawled in yellow marker while investigating the man who got into a shootout with law enforcement in western Minnesota last week. The message, written on a door with broken glass, read “Sorry IW,” according to court documents.

The initials belong to a relative whose shotgun was allegedly stolen by Kasey Paul Willander, 27, before a 15-hour standoff with law enforcement at his father's home near Clarkfield, Minnesota, 15 miles south of Montevideo.

Willander is charged with burglary while in possession of a weapon, according to a criminal complaint containing new details about the incident filed Friday. It is the first charge against him in the incident.

Willander barricaded himself in a relative's home on the afternoon of Sept. 15 and fired at law enforcement at least twice before being shot and arrested the next morning, a statement from the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office said earlier this week.

Eight law enforcement officers shot Willander during the siege, leaving him hospitalized but in stable condition in Ho Chi Minh City. No one else was injured in the incident, state authorities said Thursday.

Law enforcement on Friday accused Willander of stealing the long gun used in the shooting from his great-uncle, Irving Willander.
