The decision to fire Albany International Airport CEO Phil Calderone has drawn widespread suspicion. The airport's board told Calderone earlier this month that it would not extend his contract.

People are questioning the reasons and wisdom of this decision, given that the airport is currently undergoing a $100 million renovation.

A group of 16 Albany County legislators have now written a letter to the airport authority, urging the authority to renew Calderone's contract.

State lawmakers are calling for more transparency, while questioning the timing of Calderone's decision.

Many called Calderone's ouster a backdoor political maneuver designed to usher in Albany County Executive Dan McCoy as Calderone's replacement. McCoy has since withdrawn from the job.

NewsChannel 13 reached out to Calderone, McCoy and the airport authority for comment. The only response we received came from Calderone's office. The statement said Calderone is currently focused on the reconstruction project.
