Home destroyed by fire in rural Surrey, B.C.

No one was injured when a major fire destroyed a home in a rural part of Surrey overnight.

Crews were called to the scene on 164th Street, near 52nd Avenue, along the Serpentine River, around 10 p.m. Friday.

When they arrived, they found a large home “completely engulfed” in flames, according to Greg McRobbie, assistant chief of operations for the Surrey Fire Service.

Responding crews quickly called a second alarm and firefighters battled the blaze from the outside because of a wall collapse that made entry into the structure unsafe, McRobbie said.

A total of 28 firefighters responded in seven trucks, but additional personnel were needed to operate five marine shuttle trucks as the fire occurred in an area with no nearby fire hydrants.

McRobbie said crews left the scene around 6 a.m. Saturday and no evidence was found to indicate the fire was suspicious.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a fire inspector is expected to visit the property on Monday, the deputy chief said.

He added that no one was home when the fire broke out and crews have heard no indication of how many people will be displaced or require emergency services due to the fire.

The burned house is visible Saturday morning. (CTV News)
