Clairemont Mesa Man Arrested for Allegedly Murdering Mother

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A Clairemont Mesa man was arrested Friday on suspicion of stabbing his mother to death at their home near Tecolote Canyon, authorities said.

Jamal Aytes, 30, was taken into custody Thursday night after showing up at a hospital for treatment of cuts to his hands, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Several hours earlier, the suspect had called police to report that his mother, Jacqueline Aytes, 60, was “having a complete mental breakdown” in their apartment in the 7300 block of Mesa College Drive and had threatened him with a butter knife, SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell said.

“She was examined and it was determined that she did not meet the criteria for mental health detention,” Campbell said. “Her son was not present at the time and the officers did not conclude that a crime had been committed.”

After a hospital staff member reported that Jamal Aytes had sought treatment for his suspicious injuries, officers returned to his home to conduct a welfare check. After entering the apartment, they found his mother dead inside, apparently from stab wounds, Campbell said.

After his release from hospital, the suspect will be charged with murder, police said.
