Man convicted in 2021 Waikiki stabbing that killed visitor

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii State Supreme Court on Friday overturned Oscar Cardona's guilty verdict and life sentence.

He was convicted of murdering a 19-year-old tourist in Waikiki three years ago.

Cardona claimed self-defense but was convicted in 2022.

But in a ruling Friday, the state Supreme Court overturned that decision, citing prosecutorial misconduct.

The case now goes to the lower court and prosecutors could review it.

Cardona was being held at Saguaro Prison in Arizona.

He will now be returned to Hawaii as a pretrial detainee.
