Based on the novel by Carola Lovering, “Tell Me Lies” has been Hulu’s hit sexy teen soap opera since its release in 2022. It’s back for a second season and the romantic drama is already generating buzz, even though we’re only a handful of episodes in this month. Meaghan Oppenheimer is the mind behind the series and manages to capture the tumultuous and unhealthy relationships of young adults.

“Normal people”

Set in Ireland, “Normal People” is a miniseries based on a 2018 novel by Sally Rooney. It tells the story of Marianne and Connell, who come from the same small town and attend the same school, but are incredibly far apart in terms of social status and personality. Connell is outgoing, athletic, and popular; Marianne, on the other hand, is an academic and somewhat socially marginalized. Despite their differences, their lives intertwine and a romance blossoms between the characters, especially as their lives progress toward college.

You'll appreciate that this romance isn't as sappy as “Tell Me Lies.” However, it certainly has plenty of spice, but nothing exploitative or gratuitous. It's a story of growth, self-discovery, and breaking free from the bonds of childhood.

Before “Tell Me Lies” came along, “You” explored unhealthy obsessions. Based on a series of novels by Caroline Kepnes, the show’s first season focuses on Joe’s growing interest in Guinevere (usually called Beck). He uses any means necessary, including social media and technology, to pursue her. He even goes so far as to eliminate obstacles, like friends and an ex-boyfriend, that could get in the way of his romantic relationship with her.

Penn Badgley does a phenomenal job of embodying Joe's sinister and determined nature. He's an exciting character to follow throughout the series.

“Behind his eyes”

If you prefer complicated love triangles, you should check out “Behind Her Eyes.” Like the other series on our list, this one is also based on a book. It’s based on a 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough, which tells the story of Louise, a single mother who gets a job as a secretary in a psychiatrist’s office. However, one night at a bar, she runs into her future boss and begins a romantic relationship with him. Things get a little complicated when she finds out he’s married and even more so when she befriends his wife.

You might find the beginning of this mini-series a bit slow, but things start to pick up. Plus, you don't want to miss the shock of an ending that will make this series worth watching.

“Cruel Summer” has all the heat you need to say goodbye to summer. In this anthology series, we go back to the ’90s, with the first season focusing on two teenage girls, Jeanette and Kate. Kate disappears, leaving Jeanette to wonder what happened while embracing many aspects of her life. Meanwhile, Season 2 focuses on three friends, Megan, Isabella, and Luke, which turns into a bizarre love triangle with a horrifying conclusion.

Unfortunately, we only have two seasons of this series, but there is still a lot to offer you. You will end up feeling sorry for everyone involved, whether they are the victim or the villain. Plus, even though the story screams high school drama, it is much more complex than you think.

“Conversations with Friends”

This is another Irish miniseries that you should not miss. It is based on another novel by Sally Rooney and focuses on two students, Frances and Bobbi, who develop a complicated relationship with the married couple, Melissa and Nick. The plot may not be as intense as that of “Tell Me Lies”, but the relationships between the characters will captivate you. This is one of the highlights of the series, and many people have praised the acting of the four main actors in the series.

Unfortunately, this series has been removed from Hulu. However, it is available to rent on other streaming networks. It is worth watching and you won’t be disappointed, especially if you like relationship-driven dramas. Also, if you are a fan of the book, you will be happy to know that this series has stuck pretty close to it.
