Johnny Depp Makes Honest Confession About 'Awkward' Kiss With Keira Knightley When She Was Just a Teenager

Johnny Depp once said he kissed Keira Knightley when she was just a teenager, and his comments were surprising.

The two starred opposite each other in the beloved film Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with the first film released in 2003.

They played Elizabeth Swann and Captain Jack Sparrow, respectively.

The two were involved in a love triangle with Will Turner's character (Orlando Bloom).

Many viewers were actually hoping that Swann and Sparrow would eventually end up together in the franchise, even though Turner was clearly perfect for her.

At the time of filming, Knightley was a promising actress at just 17 years old.

Meanwhile, Depp was much more established and was 39 years old – coincidentally, the same age Knightley is today.

In 2012, Depp shared his feelings about their kiss in an interview with The Standard.

He said: “Kissing someone you're not romantically involved with is always awkward, but the fact that Keira is twenty years younger than me made it infinitely more awkward. Still, she was very kind and we did what we had to do.”

Knightley had his say on the kiss.

In a 2006 interview with TMZ, she said: “I couldn't ask for a better kissing scene with Johnny Depp, in fact I think my 14-year-old self was screaming with delight.

“It was fantastic! What more could a girl ask for? I have Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and I can kiss them both. It's wonderful!”

As the years passed and after having had time to reflect, in 2018 Knightley gave an interview that frames his experience on Pirates of the Caribbean in a different light.

She told Variety: “I'm not an extrovert, so I found that level of scrutiny and that level of fame really difficult.

“It was an age where you become, where you haven't become, and where you have to make mistakes. It's a very precarious age, especially for women.”

She continued: “So, looking back, would I do anything differently? No, I wouldn't because I'm incredibly lucky now, and my career is at a place where I'm really enjoying it, and I have a level of fame that's much less intense.

Keira Knightley has since admitted to having “many years of therapy” (Tim P. Whitby/Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images for BFI)

“I can deal with it now, and that's great. But back then it wasn't so bad, and it took me many years of therapy to get there.”

The actress also shared her lessons about being a young woman in the industry.

“We have to be very careful with our young women.

“When I work with young actresses, I’m very protective of them. A lot of people say, ‘Oh, you’re only here because of your face.’ And they put them down because of their appearance. I think everyone can be a little kinder,” she concluded.
