Suspect in Farmington Hills police standoff charged

A Farmington Hills man accused of holding police at bay and firing a rifle at officers last weekend has been charged, authorities said.

Dejuan Patrick Evans, 32, was charged Monday by the Oakland County District Attorney's Office with three counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, six counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a second offense and one count of domestic violence.

Court documents Tuesday said Evans had not yet been summoned and had not appointed an attorney for him.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison for the assault with intent to murder charge, up to five years for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, up to four years for each of the assaults with a dangerous weapon charges, five years for the felony firearm charge and up to 93 days for the misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald said the charges against Evans stem from an incident involving a barricaded gunman inside a Farmington Hills home Sunday.

Police were called to the victim's home in the area of Middlebelt and 12 Mile roads around noon for a report of a domestic dispute and assault. They said Evans allegedly assaulted a woman and threatened her life in front of her children.

One of her children called 911, authorities said. The woman told police when they arrived that Evans had assaulted her, authorities said. Her children remained inside the home.

Officers attempted to engage the alleged assailant, who responded by brandishing a rifle and shooting at police, authorities said. They attempted to restrain the suspect and he reportedly barricaded himself in the home with the two children, authorities said.

Police retreated, took cover and called other law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, for assistance.

Investigators said the two children eventually escaped the home and the suspect appeared at the front door with a rifle. They said he fired again at officers, hitting several homes and police vehicles. A SWAT team sniper returned fire and hit the suspect with a single shot, authorities said.

Police immediately gave him aid until he was taken to hospital, she said.

Prosecutors said Evans remains in custody and under guard at the hospital.

“Law enforcement officers rushed into imminent danger, putting their own lives at risk, to save the lives of the victim and her children,” McDonald said in a statement. “I applaud the speed with which law enforcement officers stopped this extremely dangerous situation. My office’s top priority is public safety, and we will pursue those who threaten the safety of our community and the lives of others, including children and law enforcement officers, to the fullest extent of the law.”
