Hall County authorities have now identified the person struck and killed by a train early Saturday morning as a Gainesville man.

A statement from the Hall County Sheriff's Office Tuesday morning identified the person killed as Justin Keith Bennett, 26.

The sheriff's office has not said why Bennett was on the tracks, but the initial investigation reportedly showed he did not respond to the train driver's horn and brakes.

Authorities say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in Gainesville early Saturday morning.

A statement from the Hall County Sheriff's Office said Monday that they found a man dead on the tracks near the intersection of Dorsey Street and Industrial Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

“Based on the initial investigation, the unidentified male was walking on the tracks, away from the approaching train, when he was struck,” the sheriff's office said in a statement. “The Amtrak train operator sounded the horn and applied the brakes, but the male did not respond.”

Investigators had not yet been able to identify the victim as of Monday morning.
